ESSENCE’s 2012 Black Women in Hollywood honorees Shonda Rhimes and Kerry Washington (pictured) have reason to celebrate: ABC gave their the hit show, Scandal, the green light for a second season.
According to Hollywood Reporter, this will be the second year in a row that Rhimes has three successful series — Scandal, Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice — running on the network. It is not likely that her period drama, Gilded Lilys, will get picked up.
Scandal, a D.C.-based political drama in which Washington stars as a high-level problem solver, is based on the real-life experiences of PR guru and crisis management consultant Judy Smith.

ROOSTER CAPTURE: British Bling
Yesterday, Great Britain held its annual opening session of Parliament in which Queen Elizabeth II laid out her goals for the legislative body for the year. These included: removal of regulations making it tougher for small business and general private sector growth, solutions for greater economic stability, and a legislative effort to “break up” larger parts of the financial industry.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel is calling for French president-elect Francois Hollande to join her in making “necessary decisions” to resolve Europe’s debt crisis.
Mr. Hollande is calling for new policies to boost European economic growth, but Ms. Merkel has ruled out a renegotiation of a European Union pact calling for tight budget controls.
Greece, Ireland, and Portugal have secured hundreds of billions of dollars in bailouts after meeting the demands of their international creditors to cut spending. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso says the three countries have no choice but to follow through on their austerity plans.
