The long time civil rights leader was the last of a generation. He’s well known as the leader of the Birmingham Campaign in the Summer of 1963, the images from which (students and marchers mowed down by fire hoses and attack dogs) brought the cause of freedom for many Americans into living rooms in the U.S. and newspapers around the world.
