Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rev. Ralph David Abernathy speak on behalf of Rosa Parks and the Montgomery Improvement Association (lead organization for the Montgomery Bus Boycott) 1955.

On this day in 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery bus, sparking the boycott that led to the birth of the modern Civil Rights movement of the 20th century.
Teaming up with future icons Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Rev. Ralph David Abernathy, Parks’ stand soon spread nationwide leading to the desegregation of buses.

By the time of her death in 2005, Parks earned countless awards from the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1996 from President Bill Clinton to the Congressional Gold Medal in 1997, both awards are the highest level awarded to a civilian by the executive and legislative branches respectively.
